First System-Wide Rollout of Contactless Smart Card In Petroleum Marketing Industry
New RFID-based payment system will deliver increased convenience and security for Sheetz customers.
Greensboro, NC - USA - January 3, 2005 - Sheetz, Inc., one of the
fastest growing family owned and operated convenience store chains in
the US, is adding Gilbarco Veeder-Root's new contactless smart card
payment option to more than 3,100 fueling positions in the company's
Gilbarco branded dispensers in North Carolina, Pennsylvania,West
Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Ohio.
Because the contactless smart card payment system is compliant with
global standard ISO 14443, and is backed by three major credit card
companies, transactions qualify as a card swipe and therefore get the
best transaction rate. Sheetz' deployment also avoids other barriers of
adopting Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) payment, because no
proprietary database/look-up table is required and the major credit
card companies will bear the cost of issuing the RF-enabled cards and
tokens.
"We are confident that the convenience and security of Gilbarco
Veeder-Root's contactless payment option will be well received among
Sheetz' customers at the pump, and will contribute to the overall
time-savings and pleasant shopping experience for our customers," said
Louie Sheetz, executive vice president of marketing, Sheetz, Inc.
The rollout is also supported by POS systems and software provided by
Radiant Systems of Alpharetta, GA and in-store readers provided by
VivoTech of Santa Clara, CA. Transaction processing is provided by the
WINPAY product from ACI. The combined system will provide unparalleled
convenience by enabling Sheetz customers to make purchases with a
simple "tap" of an RF-equipped credit card.
In addition, the Gilbarco Veeder-Root contactless smart card option
provides greater protection from card skimming at the pump by
supporting Dynamic Card Verification Code (CVC) capability of the
cards. CVC uses radio frequency power to change the account number with
every transaction. Any transaction attempting to use a counterfeit
"white card" is rejected by the host, which recognizes that the number
has already been used.
"The innovative radio frequency (RF)-based payment options represent
one of the most significant payment advancements in the retail
industry," said Vince Holbrook, product manager for Gilbarco
Veeder-Root. "Sheetz maximizes its dispenser investment by making
payment for fueling easier and more secure for their customers."
