Gilbarco Veeder-Root Announces e-CRIND

The Next Generation Open Source Technology Dispenser Platform

GREENSBORO, NC - October 10, 2006 - Gilbarco Veeder-Root announced today an enhancement to the Encore-S® fuel dispenser product line called e-CRIND®, the next evolution of the Gilbarco CRIND® platform.   This new offering enables retailers to turn dispensers into forecourt profit centers, by offering functionality such as color screens, integrated merchandising, and custom ordering applications.

Andrew Robinson, director of global payment systems for Gilbarco Veeder-Root, said, "Our customers can be confident that the e-CRIND platform that they are purchasing today is capable of delivering exceptional customer convenience to the forecourt, now and into the future. With an Intel and Linux-based computing core, e-CRIND delivers improved reliability and easy use of 3rd party applications."

The platform supports a number of programs such as Gilbarco's SMART Merchandising and on-screen menus for food ordering at the pump.  With this interactive, multimedia advertising and couponing program, vibrant color screens and content management tools, the e-CRIND platform allows retailers to create and manage promotions, coupons, and transaction screens at the pump, according to Robinson.

e-CRIND delivers this functionality without requiring any changes to existing point of sale devices or interfaces.  "We understand the importance of backwards compatibility with investments that have already been made," stated Robinson.  "As a result, we are providing a powerful payment platform that delivers new and exciting functionality without the need to change any existing POS interfaces."

The e-CRIND platform can be further upgraded for sites requiring fully unattended fueling, or for those wanting POS processing in the dispenser itself.  In these instances, e-CRIND can be configured to have resident POS capability, thereby providing fault tolerant fueling and ensuring that the dispenser is always up and running, regardless of the status of the in-store POS.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root built the platform with open architecture in mind.  Through the seamless integration of key open source technologies like the Linux operating system and Apache web server, Robinson pointed out that the company is able to bring robust and flexible enterprise applications to the forecourt.  Additionally, they use standard industry tools, like Java, in developing the software platform in order to provide more efficient and robust customer application development by Gilbarco or third parties.  In fact, authorized third parties will be encouraged to customize applications to meet customer needs.
