Gilbarco Ships 1000th PCI-approved FlexPay™ Encrypting PIN Pad
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Retailers are adopting Encrypting PIN Pads at their fuel dispensers well ahead of the impending deadlines, according to Scott McDowell, marketing manager for North American payment
products at Gilbarco Veeder-Root. The company shipped the 1000th PCI-approved FlexPay™ Encrypting PIN Pad (EPP) on September 26, indicating strong market acceptance. Gilbarco’s FlexPay EPP was chosen as the 2008 CSP Retailers’ Choice Best New Product in the Technology Hardware category on September 15.
“The majority of new dispensers are now being ordered with the FlexPay EPP option factory-installed to meet current and future PCI requirements,” McDowell said. “Retailers are getting the PCI EPP approved devices on their new dispensers to avoid the cost of field retrofits later and to beat the January 2009 deadline for compliance in new dispensers.”
Retailers who do this save about $400 per dispenser in field installation costs, according to McDowell.
“We have had no problems with the FlexPay Encrypting PIN Pads,” said Randy Cobb, vice president and general manager of Danville, Virginia-based Abercrombie Oil Company. “They meet our compliance needs and I actually prefer the metallic, tactile keys over the plastic membrane type. They are more user-friendly and quite sturdy.” In addition to his position at Abercrombie Oil Company, Cobb is president elect of the North Carolina Petroleum and Convenience Marketers and takes office in January 2009.
“Retailers are also mindful of the July 2010 compliance mandate for upgrading all their existing dispensers that accept debit in the field,” McDowell added. “At a price of about $1500 per dispenser for field retrofit hardware, Gilbarco’s FlexPay Encrypting PIN Pad is the most cost-effective choice for upgrading existing Gilbarco dispensers. Installation is easy and integrated. Adding FlexPay EPP doesn’t require any changes to the existing POS or wiring. There is certainly no reason for a retailer to spend $15,000 more per site to totally replace the existing CRIND® card reader in dispensers with a third-party system.”
Many retailers turn to Gilbarco’s services organization to coordinate and manage the logistics of their field upgrade programs, according to Fawaz Khalil, Gilbarco’s director of service marketing. Khalil says Gilbarco brings a network of 3,500 trained technicians, 500 service providers, a 24/7 Help Desk, and a staff of project managers to help provide retailers with a turn-key solution to meet the schedule for their installed base of dispensers.
Gilbarco’s FlexPay Encrypting PIN Pads will be on exhibit at the NACS show, October 4-7 at McCormick Place in Chicago, booth 6148.
