Loyalty programs can boost C-store marketing efforts but as more retailers adopt, more is learned about their implementation. Frequently the end customer experience doesn’t always match the intended outcome – with every success, there are loyalty initiatives that miss the mark.

Successful loyalty programs must include these fundamentals elements:

  • Use Persona Segmentation To Differentiate And Target Messages

The payment world is at the precipice of adopting a groundbreaking technology which, will permanently alter the way people use mobile devices to interact with their daily environment. NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short range read and write wireless communication protocol.

First conceived in 2004 by Philips and Sony, NFC allows devices to communicate with each other and exchange data at close range (approximately four centimeters) by coming into proximity contact with one another. A NFC enabled mobile phone can be used to...

As our industry continues to roll out EMV chip card technology, fraud at the c-store will continue to decline due to the benefits of EMV in combating card-present counterfeit fraud. As this happens, fraudsters will likely shift their focus to other low hanging fruit, such as online or e-commerce fraud where it’s more difficult to verify the identity of the person making the transaction.  This is generally what other markets around the world have experienced after fully adopting EMV. Although e-commerce doesn’t play a big role in today’s c-store, I thought...

As I reflect on Gilbarco’s recent Retail Technology Conference, I find myself eager to highlight a number of specific cases where retailers are using technology to drive real business results. Many of this year’s innovation conversations focused on delivering a differentiated brand experience through custom mobile applications and/or a tailored loyalty rewards experience. The range of applications being used to carry out consumer experiences is vast and...

The USDA in its expanding support of American-grown renewable energy, announced the Biofuels Infrastructure Partnership (BIP) on May 29th. This program is designed to double the number of renewable fuel blender pumps that supply higher ethanol blends, like E15 and E85, and increase ethanol consumption. Proponents of the BIP see this as a considerable opportunity to strengthen the positioning of renewable fuels through availability and reach and to give consumers more choices at the pump.

On June 16, 2015 the USDA will issue a Notice...

As the issue with credit card fraud in the U.S. increases, we continue see more coverage in mainstream media around the need for greater payment security. On May 27th, The Today Show on NBC released the latest in their series titled “Hackers of America”. The report focused on how easy it is for hackers to steal the cardholder’s information from a magnetic stripe and use it to create fraudulent mag-stripe cards. Tom Costello noted in his interview with James Lyne, Head of Security Research at Sophos, that EMV is “the next step” towards solving this...

We’re now less than 6 months away from the October liability shift that is driving merchants and card issuers to deploy EMV-enabled point-of-sale systems and EMV chip cards respectively.  A big question on everyone’s mind as this date draws closer is whether the major card associations will maintain the current liability shift dates, or delay them to provide more time to get new cards and terminals into the market.  What we’ve continued to see is a strong commitment from the card associations to hold their dates in order to continue incentivizing a rapid...

1. How important is the dispenser media channel to entertainment partners and advertising partners? In other words, how do entertainment and advertising providers view the fueling consumer?

The dispenser media channel has become an increasingly important component of the media strategy for many of our advertising partners and it continues to grow in importance as networks are quickly expanding. The ability to engage and influence millions of consumers each day on a one-to-one basis with rich video media when they are...

Let’s face it.  Smartphones have become a part of our everyday shopping experience.  Apps, mobile couponing, and location-based offers are all examples of how mobile is playing a larger role in the retail environment. While mobile is certainly helping retailers promote their brand and drive traffic, it is also the prime suspect attributing to a drop in impulse purchases at the checkout lanes across the country.

Some researchers call it the mobile blinder.  I was thinking about that the other day as I was standing in line at the local...

As EMVTM cards have rolled out in other parts of the world, the majority of them have been issued with an associated PIN (Personal Identification Number) that a consumer must enter to successfully make a transaction.  In some countries use of a PIN is a mandated standard with EMV.  In the UK, it’s not uncommon to hear people informally refer to their EMV cards as “my Chip-and-PIN”.  However, as the U.S. migrates to EMV, we’ve seen most card issuers introduce EMV cards that only require a signature versus a PIN.  I’d like to take a moment to...
