The payment upgrade that kept fuel sales flowing

The payment upgrade that kept fuel sales flowing

One award-winning retailer, one small-format site, and one outdoor payment solution that unlocked 24/7 fuel sales without adding labour cost.

For Ross Hallett, improving the business has always been part of the job. With more than 50 years in the industry, a long-established Shell service station and workshop, and a track record that includes nine global Shell competition wins, five global prizes, and world number one, Ross knows what it takes to run a high-performing site.

But like many fuel retailers, he was facing a familiar challenge: how to increase fuel volume without increasing overheads. Wage costs were rising, weekend staffing was expensive, and extending staffed trading hours simply did not make commercial sense. At the same time, changing customer habits, increasing drive-offs, and after-hours demand were all putting pressure on the traditional forecourt model.

Ross needed a solution that would let the site keep selling fuel beyond staffed hours, without adding another disconnected system or compromising the way the business already ran. Integration was critical. Reliability was non-negotiable. And after a poor experience with another outdoor payment provider that failed to work despite being installed for six months, Ross was looking for a solution he could trust.

That led him to FlexPay 6.

Ross chose FlexPay 6 because it delivered what other solutions could not: a modern user experience, seamless integration with his POS environment, support for the payment methods he needed, and a straightforward installation process. Transactions flow into his point of sale like an additional till, giving him the visibility and simplicity he wanted without extra reporting complexity.

24/7 fuel trading without additional labour cost

For Ross, the biggest shift was immediate: the forecourt could continue generating revenue even when the store was closed.

Instead of employing staff to cover longer hours, FlexPay 6 allowed the site to offer secure, self-service outdoor payment around the clock. That meant Ross could extend fuel availability, capture out-of-hours demand, and grow volume without taking on the labour cost that would normally come with longer trading hours.

It also created a safer operating model by reducing the need for staff presence during higher-risk periods.

An increase of 25% fuel sold in one month

Since introducing outdoor payment, Ross has seen a significant uplift in fuel volume.

In one month alone, he says the site pushed another 25% fuel volume through the forecourt because of the outdoor payment capability. Just as importantly, those sales were not simply existing customers purchasing at a different time. FlexPay 6 helped attract new customers, especially shift workers and late-night drivers who had never used the site before because it had always been closed when they passed by.

That gave Ross a way to grow volume using the site he already had without extending store operations or adding labour.

No negative impact on shop sales

One of the most common concerns around pay-at-pump is whether customers will stop coming inside.

Ross’ experience suggests otherwise. Because his after-hours fuel sales happen when the shop is closed, there was no expectation of overnight shop revenue anyway. During the day, he found that the 24/7 outdoor payment option did not damage shop performance, and in some cases, the reduced pressure at the till was able to support a better customer flow and more freedom to browse.

The result was stronger forecourt convenience without undermining the rest of the business.

Reduced risk on a changing forecourt

Like many Australian retailers, Ross had seen rising concern around drive-offs, theft, and staff safety. He had also experienced robbery at the site, making security an even more important consideration in how the business operated.

For Ross, FlexPay 6 helped remove a major source of risk by giving customers a secure way to pay at the pump and reducing the need for after-hours staffing on the forecourt. In a market where fuel theft and forecourt crime are becoming more visible, that added reassurance matters.

“I’ve eliminated all that risk for staff members.”

Installation was another factor that stood out. After the frustration of a previous failed solution, Ross found the FlexPay 6 setup refreshingly simple. The terminal was easier to connect, quicker to commission, and integrated cleanly into the wider site environment. Once in place, the system began delivering value from day one.

For a retailer focused on performance, ease of use, and return on investment, that made the decision feel straightforward.

“An outdoor payment terminal is a no-brainer, a relatively small investment for a very, very strong return.”
